    Default Exhaust studs Need help.

Ok, I replaced my cracked 1g exhaust manifold with a 2g one I bought from a guy off the net. When I was taking the old one off I of course broke one stud (upper furthest to the right.) Tried getting it out with an easy out but due to my drill and drill bits being shit I never got it out. I had school the next day and my car had been down a couple days so I said screw it. Well when putting the new one on, I was tighting down the bolts and snapped another one. So I need to know where I can go to get them removed. I would rather go to a shop that deals with DSMs regularly. How much should it cost to get two studs removed? And one more thing, It was tapped for and egt gauge, which I dont have. I tried to just put a bolt in there but its still leaking. Any suggestions on what do with that? Thanks for the help in advance, and sorry for such a long post.

Well, I've got a set of ez outs, but lack a good drill, so if we go for a drive down to home depot and buy me a dewalt cordless (about $200) I'll get them studs out for you (what can I say, removing broke studs is a pain in the ass and I need a decent drill) You'd be better off having someone else do it... but that's my price

As for the EGT hole... get some high temp silicone and put it on the threads of the bolt before you screw it in. it should seal.

Ok, well today I went to smog my car and FAILED. Ya wasnt real suprising to me. I have been getting really bad gas mileage and havnt been driving it hard enough to get 16mpg like i am. Anyway apparently I have a "Gross Polluter" lol. I am really lost. I have no idea what to fix or even look for. What do you guys think? I really need help here. Would the exhaust leak have me fail automatically? Ya I know Im still learning guys.

Definately need to make sure you don't have an exhaust leak. Also check your O2 sensor, and do a compression test (cause it never hurts)

The high hydrocarbons could mean that your cat is tired, or that your putting more fuel into the car than it can burn (bad O2 will sometimes do that) I'm guessing the latter since your gas milage sucks. Also, if you're dumping excess fuel and it's not all burning, it will burn your cat out eventually. Keep that in mind.

I'd start with that, and go from there.

Ok, well the other day going to work I started hearing a horrible noise lol. Well took off the heat shield to find that the bolt that I used to plug up the egt hole had popped out. Put it back in didnt make it more then 200 feet before it popped out again and was lost for good haha. Anyway I cant drive it like this it sounds like I have rocks in my engine and I had a hard time already finding one that fit(guess it really didnt)So should I have it welded? Where would you guys recomend I have it welded I need my car!!! Thanks.

Btw Thanks for the help Jon. Before this happened I knew I had some leaks from the two broken studs and the loose bolt on the lower right one. So im sure that didnt help but ill check out my cat too.

why not get an EGT guage? wouldn't hurt to have, and since it's already tapped for it... otherwise look for a tapered plug (like for water fittings) that will snug up more as you tighten it more.
