    Default smog help

well i'm trying to smog my 98 GSX, and everything is working against me of coarse. They failed it because of the greddy bov, and the C0 reading read 106 max is 100. And also it failed the MIL/ CEL function which the guy said could be from disconnecting battery recently because i did last week, and i never get codes. So i'm gonna throw the stock bov back on maybe even the stock intake, run the car as hot as i can get it and hope for the best. Any other tips you guys recommend? If i run 100 octane would that help? i am barely over... i hate smog. thanks.

100 octane will get you higher Hydrocarbons, cause you'll have more unburnt fuel. If anything, put a little 87 or 89 in (but not enough to cause detonation!!!) Also, the BOV shouldn't fail you, as long as it's recirculating still (if not, that will also cause a rich condition when it opens) but putting a stock one won't hurt.

actually the greddy bov would fail you at MOST shops, anything past the MAF they make sure you have no modification without a E O number. and it looks like you barely failed CO. I would try to re-smog it and just sit in the car keeping the CAT hot and when the smog tech is ready just hand him your keys. and also if you failed for MIL/CEL, it means some of your monitors are not set, can be caused by disconnecting the battery, or they just dont want to set. i had a problem with my gst where the monitors just didnt want to set, and it would be weird because it would go to closed loop perfectly normal. i would make sure you drive your car around, take on the freeway, for about 10 miles, then take the streets back home. good luck

thanks guys, i figured it out. I drove the car for about 20 mins on the freeway and i got 36 on HC! passed easily. And i think because my positive battery cable was loose the monitors wouldnt set. it's all good now. and you are right the bov fails visual because no carb number. hopefully this is useful to someone else. Get your cars super hot before smog, totally makes a difference.

Any adjustable BOV is illegal.. period..

Some smog shops would overlook it if you had aftermarket intercooler piping to kinda cloak it..

but if you just have an aftermarket bov stuffed into your stock piping forget it..

Once I get my FMIC, I'm gunna place my HKS BOV right where the stock sidemount is, running the long intercooler piping.

That way, the BOV wont be visible, and the splash shield will cover it up.
    BIG PLANS.....STAY TUNED.....
