Default 99 GST Manual transmission problem HELP

Hi I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST. Which have problem with manual transmission. My 1st gear pops out. You can put it in the first gear but it just kiks it out even if you try to hold it in there it just pushes it out with preshur and metal noise. Same porblem with my 4th gear except 4th gear you can hold it in but it pops out if you wont hold it. So I took it a part checked for sincros they are fine so is the selector forks. Now I'm out of the options what could make that problem.

Sounds like your shifter cables need to be adjusted,, not actually going all the way into gear.

not actually going all the way into gear.

Well don't think this is it, cause I can drieve in a 4th gear but it pops out while I'm driving in it. The 1st one don't want to work at all.

 No offense to anybody, especially to jbGST , but don't listen to keyboard mechanics.
Speaking from my experiance ( I fixed a couple of problems like these) it sounds like you need shift forks inside the transmission and first gear itself and the gear selector for gear 1 & 2.

My AWDgst thanks for the experienced Input,

None taken,,, however I would hardly call myself a "Keyboard Mechanic" I have never paid for any of my cars to ever be worked on (Except the occasion oil change) And I have been further into the guts of a DSM than probably the majority of poeple here.

Not to mention jbgst rebuilds trannies..... :P

    auto trannies..

a manual tranny is about as complicated as a set of linkin logs..

I always start simple.. So checking your cables isnt a bad idea.. popping back out of gear is a symptom of a badly adjusted cable.. the fork doesnt fully engage the gear and it can pop out..
(Ive had this problem a few times..)

ALSO.. check the bracket on the tranny that locates the shifter cables in front of the selection arms.. Have someone move the shifter through the gears and watch that bracket.. if its loose and it moves you will not be able to get the car fully into gear.. Its pretty easy to strip the threads out that bolt this bracket to the tranny..

If theres a possibility it could be cables.. thats where id start..

It would be pretty fugging retarded to pull your trans only to find out that its perfect and replacing or adjusting your cables was all it needed..

Dood that is exactly what happens when the cable cant move the fork far enough to get the gear fully engaged..

It will drive fine but pop out..

Its way more likely to have a problem in the shifter cables or brackets than actual broken or bent forks..

    Check those first..

Im not a pro on the stick but Since he already has it out it wouldnt hurt to check everything,,, Listen for some noisy bearings make sure the syncro's dont lock with just a little bit of pressure they should still move freely...

My thoughts on the shift fork would be it works or it doesnt,, seems to me if the fork is wearing thin this might cause it (But it would have to be realy thin, with some major slop on the preload),, but the likely hood of that seems slim,,, it would probably overheat and break all the way before realy wearing thin.

I have had my tranny apart a few times amongst others for the DSM, ben can vouch for my tear down and reassy time, and i honestly cant think of anything as long as the syncro assy's are working,,,,

    Ben,,,

The metal those forks are made out look like they would snap long before they would bend,, I could be wrong but you have seen them too, and Im sure you know what im talking about.

Ok I'm a litle cofused here. You guys saing that those cablese are ajastable. So I cheked the whole cable from shifter to all the way to transmission and it don't ajast anywhere. Is there some triky way to do it. Just to remind it's a 99 GST Manual.
