    Default Sonf of a B.. F-ing smog..

So long story short.. State ref.. bla bla.. Smog.. Bla..

Fails gross poluter style.. neat.. over 300 on the hydrocarbon readings..

So i went over the shit with a fine tooth and comb.. Bad Maf.. Timing problems (Wont get into that but its fixed..) Replaced the EGR....

Take it to a local test station for a pre-test..

Gross poluter style at idle.. 351 on the hydrocarbons.. (140 limit)

Passes on the 2500 test.. at 77 which the avarage is around 20 .. so even thats high..

    Then i did a compression test :(

    4-1

    145 - 155 - 120 - 140

Dropped some oil in #2 and it went up to 165 so its rings

    :(

So anyone thinking that cylinder #2 could cause that bad of a failure or should I keep looking?

I only ask because i dont typically try to smog cars with one bad cylinder.. Soo.. No idea..

The cat is off of Jason's car and looks gnarly.. Not stock tho.. its a 2.5 catco

But with 351 on the idle hydrocarbons it cant only be a cat.. Shit it would get lower than that if it were running right WITHOUT a cat..

It's definately possible that the cylinder with low compression is causing the high HC's. HC's are a misfire indicator being that it's unburnt fuel. The low compression may be just low enough to keep the entire fuel mixture to burn causing the high HC's. What were the other gas readings? By looking at the others you can narrow the problem down further to whether or not it's a rich misfire, lean misfire, or mechanical misfire (low compression, bad spark, etc)

CO2 looked good.. so the mixture was pretty well spot on..

It does have a bit of a miss now when there is no load on the engine.... wunderwar..

(Which duh will cause increased Hc)

Im about ready to say F-it.. It needs a rebuild now anyways.. Either I will retire or shell out another few g's..

Hard decision when the wife is telling me I can go out and buy another car at any time..

Shit she even gave me a greenlight for an EVO a little while back.. Im just stubborn..

This f-ing DSM is going to give me some good 1/4 mile passes before i send it off a cliff damn it!

    Dibs on your bumper. :P

Bro. I live my dsm, but If my wife gave me the green on an evo I'd be signing the papers before she finished saying EVO.

    hehe Damned vultures..

    Yeh i know..

Problem is that ive spent the price of a used evo on this DSM over the last 3 years..

    Literally..

Sooooo close.. hehe.. Its what i get for NOT being a Cheap DSM-er..

I jsut never rebuilt the bottom end because it was good.. How good.. who knows. Previous owner had it done.. But its held up to some serious abuse for 3 years.. Even got me a runner up at a trophy class NHRA Chassis works series drag.. (Which im bitter about.. It was pre-2step and i bogged the launch on the money race :(

Now that im a student again THIS happens.. heh..

Im starting to lose faith! Especially with the whole state ref BS.. The Evo is the next rice rocket.. Too many well-to-do kids are getting their hands on them and ricing them out allready!

Makes me wanna go out and get a 69 z-28 for a cheapo rolling chassis and stuff a coupla snails under the hood and flip off every cop i pass While i puke thousands of lbs of hydrocarbons into the air thru my catless exhaust..

    I think im getting "Old-Dirty'itis"

I had a 91 toyota tercel. The head gasket was blown when I'd gotten it, but it was just leaking water into #3, so they'd been driving the hell outta it... I changed the headgasket and drove it for another 6 months, but compression was 120, 125, 45, 110 or therabouts... my hydrocarbons when smog time came were 3700 (with 100 being the allowed limit for that car (compact?))

So... yea, I'd say low compression is likely causing a misfire and dumping unburnt fuel (hydrocarbons) out the back. Eventually that would destroy the cat too.

Good luck finding a cheap z28. When I was 15 or 16 I almost bought a '69 firebird with a pontiac 350 in it... had a dent in it, ran good, they were asking $2k. My mom wouldn't lend me the extra grand to buy it... I'm still slightly bitter almost 10 years later... but I've got too many cars right now anyway... now, finding a reasonably priced anything from that era... I know they can be had... but most people are asking way too much for them, and getting it.

Of course, I've got a '66 Ford custom 100 shortbed I keep thinking needs a snail... it's got a 300 Inline Super-6... Can you just imagine the gobs or torque a turboed 5 liter inline 6 would make?!?!

you dont have to get a 60's hot rod to be left alone by the nazi's. my mustang was pretty illegal and i never had one problem, even with a huge cam in the thing. plus you could really smell the not cats on my car, any cop with half a brain would know something was up. i just picked up another mustang earlier this week. i got so sick of dumping money in my talon that i put it for sale when all thats really left is dyno tuning. on top of that i lost interest in the car so with those combined its a bad mix. honestly i think you should get the evo if you want it, yea its a little more money but i think you will enjoy it way more than the 1g. even if you keep the 1g and build a motor, how long will you keep it after that if you've had it for 3 years already? i dunno how you are but i start looking for a new car after about a year and a half or so.

ah I bought a beater today..

I was thinking v8 for sure... something that wasnt too noticeable by popo's but still had good power..

So i was thinking something cheap and easy like a crown vic or some other mod 4.6...

then i started thinking about how much id love to have a DOHC 32 v mod 4.6 and drop a charger on it..

Then i started looking some more.. Thought that motor only came on Mustang cobras...

NOPE! Lincoln Mark VIII LSC baby.. Computer controlled air ride suspension, HID headlights, and tons of other random ass features..

Its got the dohc Mod motor from the cobra all wrapped up in a non cop magnet coupe..

RWD with IRS.. 290hp 295ft/lb torque...

Bought it this morning.. Its fun :) When i figured out how to turn the traction control off I stabbed the gas from a dig and left about 100+ feet of stripe all the way thru first gear with the AC on.. heeh. I missed V-8s

Plus its cheap enuf that I can still keep my 1g running.. heh.. Its all about pleasing the wife.. Plus im just getting old..

    Luxury is fun..

nice, good deal. i didn't know those had the 4v motor. ford engineers are idiots. they put the lame ass 2v in the "sports car" and the 4v in the luxury car. makes sense i guess, who wants to go fast with a sports car anyways.

    hehe.. Yup..

I like the 4v.. It has some crazy top end.. Ive ridden in 2v's before and they run out of breath up top..

This thing just seems to keep pulling harder and harder till you hit redline.. Its fun..
