    Default Non-DSM Q. Turbo noises?

I *think* my turbo may be going out on my Daytona, but I don't know what it sounds like when they go, so I'm not sure... The car makes all kinds of strange noises as it is, might even have a rod knock, but I have this squealing/metal rubbing type sound that comes and goes intermittantly(sp?), and sounds like it might be coming from the general area of the turbo(which is on the back side of the motor, near the firewall) I have noticed though that it has more to do with the boost guage than it does with the tach, so that's why I'm thining it's my turbo... I haven't gotten around to pulling the intake and checking for shaft play as I just started driving the car thursday, and I've been working since... this coming thursday (the only free day to work on my cars right now) I'm going to pull the plumbing off the turbo and see if the shaft has any play... anything else I should look for?

Also, the motor is an all stock 2.5L and the turbo still builds a strong 9psi of boost (small turbo, spools very fast)

Sounds like maybe the wheel hitting the housing. That's the first thing that comes to mind anyways. Check for extreme shaft play whenever you get to it.

That's exactly what I was thinking... Thursday I'll know for sure.

Okay, first off, you should know the daytona's computer uses the MAP sensor to determine how much fuel is used as opposed to a MAF/MAS on the DSM's.

So now I'm at a loss... I pulled the intake & hoses (what a pile of crap those are, will have to do something about that) and I found a bolt loose on my bell housing, all the others were tight, this one seemed to have worked itself about 1/4" out.

The turbo has no shaft play that I can feel & with all the intake piping off I started the car and it runs fine. I drove it a couple miles and there's no noises.

Keep in mind, the turbo's still down there spooling... I didn't take the exhaust or oil lines off, just the intakes and I can hear it spinning up and blowing air around, but there's absolutely no squealing or rubbing noises.

The thing is, since it's not actually hooked up, it doesn't make boost, just moving lots of air around, so I'm wondering, when I hook up the intake, is it going to start squealing again, or do you think that that loose bolt was leading to whatever wierd noises were being made?

    (edit)

Update - hooked up the rest of the hoses and lines, car boosts well, pulls decent, no squeal... only thing I can think is that 1 bolt was letting something sag enough for the flexplate/torque converter to rub on something... Guess that's the price you pay for a $200 car... lotsa little gremlins to work out... But on the bright side, I prolly will be able to make it to the FWD dyno day now... but only for a baseline, cause I don't even know what kinda tuning you can do on this car in it's stock configuration.
