Default First Impression... AMS t3/t4 Garrett Turbo Conversion Kit

I've been dealing with AMS for quite some time now. The guys at Automotosports have built numerous fast DSM's and Evo's. All of the employees in fact drive DSM's or Evo's as well. Any questions I've had have been answered promptly.

    The kit comes packaged with:

    ? -Turbonetics T3/T4 turbocharger: 50 trim or Super 60
    ? -AMS Turbo Adaptor Plate
    ? -SS Tubular o2 Housing
    ? -Tial 38mm Wastegate
    ? -SS 3" Downpipe
? -Oil Feed and Return Lines
? -All of the Gaskets and Bolts Required to Install

In my case, as most of you are well aware, I went with the Super 60. The turbo itself comes from Turbonetics and is assembled with the T04E housing with T3 turbine section and come standard with the ceramic ball bearing option. Upon inspection of the downpipe, it's a full 3" in its entirety. No 2.5" to 3" after the flex section for this bad boy! Martin at the AMS fabrication shop is an excellent welder! The welds are smooth and look like it can handle any amount of power I can muster. The same applies to the SS 3" tubular o2 housing as well. The kit also includes a U-bend pipe which can be made into a dump tube for the wastegate for all you smog legal guys.

The package that the kit came in was huge. Expect to not have any issues finding this beast on your door step. The contents are all packaged inside very nicely with lots of bubble wrap for your popping pleasure along with some foam-in-place inserts to keep things from shuffling around too much.

Haven't gotten to test run it yet, so I can't speak from personal experience on my car. However, I've had the pleasure of riding in a car equipped with the same setup.

Boost came on strong in 3rd gear at 3200 rpm at 20psi on the stock cams. It kept pulling up to the 28psi limit set by the manual boost controller. After the install of the Jun Stage 3 cams, boost came on strong at about 4000 rpm at 20psi, pulling all the way to 8000rpm.

More to come once I get everything running and tuned.

Can I ask how much you paid for it?

Also, what's the turbo rated at? Do you have a compressor map?

Sounds like a pretty nice kit, especially with that fat 3" O2 housing.

I'm told the turbo is efficient a little past 30psi. (33-34psi). The kit runs for $1795, but if you don't need the downpipe, then take $270 off. The AMS kit also offers the GT35RL option which goes for $2500.

that looks awesome. the super 60's make good power but have been known to surge. keep an ear out for that when its tuned. happy boosting.

i'm going to need some help tuning it. i don't know a thing about doing that. i've been reading up on it though. doesn't seem too extremely complicated to get some base settings.

Have you decided to get something other than the SAFC? Or are you going to give that a shot by itself? What's fuel mods are you doing?

i'm going to give it a shot and see how it works out for the time being. i've got 780cc injectors and AFPR with walbro 255hp. i've seen good results with the same setup. plus it'll give me a chance to see if i can really test my knowledge. if it doesn't work like i plan, then i'll give the DSMlink a shot.
