    Default DSM questions

I have been sort of following the "Tech Guide" on www.dsmtuners.com. This seems to be the foremost authority on internet DSM sites, but coming from V-8's, there are a couple of things that seem to be backwards. Are there any thoughts on the order/claims that they make with the mods that they suggest? So far, I am having the Timing belt/water pump done on friday, but they also suggest replacing the balance shaft belt as well. Should I? Also I bought a Greddy type-s BOV, as well as a Autometer pro-comp boost gauge... which will be installed friday. My goals for this car are kinda opposing. I bought it for a commuter so i can finish school, but I came from a WS-6, and I would really like to have another 12 second car, but realisticlly a 13 second will do. Can I retain stock driveablity i.e. stock sounding exhaust and gas mileage with say a t-28 and most bolt ons? Let me emphasize that I want it to be QUIET.

In a nutshell: Is that combo possible, and is the DSMtuners tech list up to par :?:

    DSM reliable? LOL

You can easily have a 13 second daily driver DSM, just follow the tuning guide on tooners. Look at it as a "bible", learn it, live it, and love it. You don't need to mod in the exact order that tooners sugests, just don't expect to slap on a bigger turbo and instantly be running 12's.

I would definately change the balance shaft belt while you are doing the timing belt. You should also change the pulleys and the water pump while you are there. Better safe than sorry....

There are millions of exhaust options available. I'm sure you can find something that will flow better than stock, but still maintain the stock look/loudness. i.e. magnaflow....

Oh and I would stay away from the t28 if i was you. Its just a glorified 14b. Might as well do it right the first time, go with the evo3 big16g. That will get you to your 13 sec goal fairly easily (with the proper supporting mods of course)...

actually t28's are 16g compressor wheels, still, not enough power for the money they cost, i got my evo3 and install kit for less 8)

What supporting mods would I need to run a 16g reliably? Would I be better just pushing the T-25 to 15 psi and see if I like that?

1badtsi is absolutely correct. bang for the buck, the evo3 big16g is the way to go....
the t25 is a worthless hairdryer. ditch it...
    for a 16g, i'd go with:

650cc injectors (550's will be fine also, 650's give you room if you wanna go bigger)
190lph Fuel Pump (or 255 if you are gonna upgrade later)
SAFC (Dsmlink would be better if ya got the money.....)
FMIC (or a supra side mount, that stock SMIC is gonna heatsoak...)
Then all the basic things: intake (open element filter), exhaust, UICP, LICP, BOV upgrade, and most importantly MAINTENENCE FIRST!!!!

i might be forgetting some stuff, but again, just follow the tuning guide thats what its there for...

A WS-6 to a GSX? Hmm thats going to be a tough one lol. You can get into the 13.9 sec arena with the T-25 and all the supporting mods fairly easily, but it won't be as fun a daily driver as your WS-6 was IMO. Since the GSX is damn heavy and since you have a hairdryer pulling your car with zero topend, my suggestion is, if your a student on a budget, a good condition 14b or the many small16g's you see floating around. $150-$250 for a REALLY good conditioned one. Heck you can even get E16g/B16g's for damn cheap now. Any of those turbos have seen sub-12's and they have a good powerband throughout the whole RPM range. Plus, you don't need all your supporting mods right away to enjoy them (much like the bigger 20G or greater turbos). I just can't recommend 2G-styled turbos to anyone, since you will be more then likely upgrading to 2G-styled licp's, oil feed/return lines, coolant feed/return lines, and other things. What happens when you want a REAL turbo (and its more then likely you won't be satisfied with a T28 after a few months...happens VERY often.)? Then you're going to have to repurchase alot of things to support a tdo5-styled housing or a Garret style even. Just my .02cents. Good luck with your choice.

I think what I am going to have to do is see what another turbo "feels" like before I buy anything. How many sac-dsm'ers have upgraded turbos and how many frequent the saturday meets? If I have Sunday off this weekend I will definatly be out, assuming the weather is nice. I haven't even done any supporting mods yet som maybe I will be happy with what the T-25 spits out. My main thing is that I DO NOT want an exhaust system. I hate the way 4 cyl exhaust sounds, and I want no part of it. Would a turbo upgrade be pretty fruitless without at least a catback? Would just a downpipe suffice?

nothing wrong with the way a DSM sounds. you're prolly thinking honda sound. DSM's sound nothing like that.
at least mine doesn't. i've got a nice growl that emits out of my car. it shakes the ground pretty nicely too at idle.
but too bad my engine is out of the car right now. it'll be running soon enough though.

most of the guys from Sac DSM have at least a 14b or 16g. some of us have bigger turbos though.
if you want to feel a real turbo, ride in either Slobo's or Savo's car.
