I was into Hondas about 4-5 years ago and came into the DSM world thinking the same thing about exhausts. I didn't want to sound like a 16 year old kid with a muffler shop exhaust system so I said I'd stick with stock. Well I didn't realize how much better a car (4 cyl or more) sounds with a turbo and aftermarket exhaust. Just listen to some of ours out at the meet and you'll see. I've got one of the milder systems (RSR) on my spyder and a big bad 3" stainless Buschur turbo back on my Talon but you'll see that even the loudest DSM exhausts aren't nearly as loud as N/A 4 cyl like Hondas.
