Default Watch out! California Crackdown on Modified Cars

I'm sure many of you have heard about it, but spreading the info to those of you who don't know yet:
    http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/05/576.asp

The $5 million dollars in federal money should be spent on something else that helps the state's economy in a more benefitial way (e.g., education system, pay off some of the state's debt, fix roads, develop/ support new businesses).

IIRC, the article you posted was more about illegal drag racing. This one specifically said they're targeting modified cars which sucks. Modified does not equal illegal (or even legal) drag racing! Let yet another 4 page discussion about how bad CA is commence :)

They're going to play hardball now, no mercy. This is San Diego's modified plan in full effect right here in Sacramento County. Automatic hood poppings upon vehicle stop, bait cars, surprise detainment AND inspections at popular hangouts, I'm telling you guys... full game is on. You are going to see profiling like you've never seen it here.

    Specifically - modified IMPORTS

    Why?

Because domestic cars have mostly CARB/DOT approved modifications.

Now, I cant use stong language on this site... but I am extremely angry by this. First of all, this means that law enforcement hasn't been doing its job to keep tabs on the community, to nip the problem in the bud before it has gotten out of hand. This tells me its a reaction to their failure. They now have to resort to these type of tactics... and oh by the way... IT BRINGS IN REVENUE. :x They have put a blanket "guilty" on all imports. Is that how the law works these days????

My suggestion is to carry a video camera at all times. If you know your car checks out ok and you get stopped, start taping. Feed the cops to the news media because the news media loves to hear about cops abusing their power, it gives them a great story to air all over the county.

Manny, I don't know if this is allowed, but if it isn't just delete this paragraph.
My dad, who is ex-CHP sells legal insurance for all sorts of situations, this is one of those situations I can think where it would come in handy. I can get you in touch with him. For example, you get yanked over by a jerkoff cop who wants to shake you down, he isn't going to listen to your measly "I got rights" statement, in the cops eyes, you are nothing but a scumbag in a cheezy import, get on the cell phone and call your lawyer right there on the spot and your lawyer and the cop can talk law for a while. If the cop thinks he has a case, so be it, if not, he can get back into his car and leave you the freak alone!

Just because they have a new "crackdown" grant, doesn't mean they are somehow above the law. Corruption here isn't as bad as it is in New York or Chicago, at least to some extent, the cops here play by the rules of the Court.
If you and I do it, it's called racketeering and extortion... when cops do it, it's called law enforcement.

    Right on cue ;)

Ah well, only 18 days until my car is out of this rediculous state. Let's hope I don't get nabbed before then. *knock on wood*

So what is the LAW on the hood poping thing? Is it considered a locked compartment? Is it ok to tell them "no" or will that just land you in the back of a squad car? Please, just the facts on this question if anyone knows them, nothing further.

Example= I have a modified exhaust and get pulled over for it. They say it's illegal and gives them probable cause to search my engine compartment for further illegal modifications. I hand over the print out from RSR showing the exhaust is 100% CARB and noise compliant for use in CA. Can they legally search my engine compartment or anything else on my car?

Pray that your license and car match the correct out of state information.

Most likely, they pull you over anyways... ask you if that is your car....ask you if your out of state residence is your current residence or if you are just visiting California... if you reveal that you reside in California and carry cali license, but drive a car registered in another state... they are going to bend you over for not registering in California and emptying your wallet into the California system like the rest of us, issue you a ticket to register in California like you are supposed to(if that is the case) and then.... start going through your car on fix it tickets or an impound, depending on how they feel.

He's military though. He flashes the ID card and there's nothing that says he has to register his car here while being stationed here.

If he's military... he COULD get by, again, these cops are on "terminate mode" It would be worth it to get him on a fix it.

They are going to rely on the "probable cause" to get up in your car.... EXPECT IT.... perhaps a lawyer could pursuade them to reconsider messing with their client.
