    Default While you were sleeping...

The California Senate just passed a measure making it mandatory for teen drivers to have a plaquard displayed on their vehicle. This is "feel good" "panic'd" response to the increase of street racing deaths on the news lately, to "help" reduce street racing(so they say). It also bans teens from driving past midnight and prevents them from carrying passengers as well.

The curfew I can understand, Let me give you the bottom line, because I was not born yesterday. If you are a teen driver, prepare to get F'd at every turn by police. This reminds me allot of Germany 1941, where the Nazi's "marked" people for quick identification. I'm not a teen driver, but this is not a solution, this is a prelude to increased harrassment of the law
If you and I do it, it's called racketeering and extortion... when cops do it, it's called law enforcement.

Hmm, this is interesting. I didn't realize there were already restrictions in place, but for drivers less than 18 years old, there's already a 12AM - 5AM curfew, and they may not carry passengers younger than 20 unless also accompanied by someone older than 25 for the first six months of their license. I sure don't remember that when I got my license, but I do remember doing some pretty stupid sh!t. I'm lucky nothing too bad ever happened.

I find it funny that the media is reporting the restrictions as being applied to "teens," when it really only applies to minors.

Also, none of these bills have been passed into law...yet.

Here's a link to a story in the Fresno Bee.

Proposed bill AB1474. Extends curfew and restriction on carrying teen passengers.

Proposed bill SB806. Placard. Allows parents to be ticketed for knowingly allowing children to violate restrictions.

Proposed bill AB963. Cell phone restriction.

To be honest, I wouldn't feel that bad about any of these bills. Why should minors have the same privileges as adults when, for the most part, they don't have the same level of responsibility as adults.

No cell phones? I wish that no one could drive while on the cell phone, but I absolutely don't want someone who just got their license to be yapping on the phone while driving.

Curfews? For the most part, they shouldn't be out that late anyway.

Placard? Eh...it makes it easier for me to avoid noob drivers.

Ok, minors and teens are different. I thought this effected 16-19. The original "first 6 months" laws were plenty.

yea... that reminds me of Japan. they placard you if you have less than 1 year driving experience by yourself. take into mind you have to drive with someone at all times until that restriction is done.

good thing is like blinded said, you'll know who to avoid.

but, here's the weird part in Japan. if you have that placard, no matter what you do, it's not your fault. you could full on T-Bone somebody by running a red light, it's not your fault. it's theirs for not avoiding you. Japan works entirely off of percentages, so you're rarely 100% at fault. if you get smashed by some old lady cause she ran the light and wasn't paying attention, you could be at 35% fault for not avoiding her, and the rest of the fault is on her. it sucks that way.

i'm glad that you said that. now that we have that out of the way, what're you going to do to stop it? remember, this is a domecratic nation, a republic where the people have a say in the government. the government doesn't like it, but they are elected by us. we can change things.

so i'll ask you all again... what're you going to do to stop it?
