    Default Smog check

I dont have any problems with smog check, i just wanted to discuss the issue of Hot Rods and smog check. Correct me if im wrong on any of this.

ok so any car older than 1975 doesnt have to pass smog, diesels dont either, but what about those old, rich dudes who build like 1930's fords? I dont believe they have to pass smog, and that kind of bothers me because they build brand new engines for those. So if i wanted to build a brand new engine for my DSM i'd be required to pass smog, but those guys get off that easy. Why? The reason i started this is cause my uncle builds Hot Rods for some old guys, and honestly i've never seen or heard of one at a smog station.

You ask some pretty basic question..

    Common sense my friend.

Back then they didn't have the SMOG laws we have today, because of this they cannot be held to the new laws and at the same time you can't force their previously aproved cars off the road...

I put it in basic terms but there is a little more detail to it. But that is pretty much the reason in a nutshell.

Yeah but the thing is they build a completely new engine, they dont restore the old ones. So say i had a car i wanted to have a fully new built engine, then ill be required to smog it. And the other guy wont be.

Well, as for diesel goes, its gonna start for them also I believe 2010, and as years go by our max's on the gases for us will only go less and less. Meaning harder to pass smog. I only say that because its gonna get worse before it gets any better. And as for old school hot rods, EPA see's them as very minimal. And also cars that are pre 76 doesn't necessarily mean they can do whatever they want. They still want them to have motors of the same family. A police officer can still make you go to a referee if he suspects big modification on a pre-76 car, even thought they do not require smog. But it rarely happens.

They NEVER assume you are putting in a new engine, the whole point is to leave it stock...

But it happens but as mentioned there aren't enough of them on the road to matter...

    Question: How old are you?

Actually for diesel, they already test for some emissions as of 2007, i believe. possibly 2006.

alot of medium and heavy duty diesel engine companies have to build in Cooled EGR, and related emissions reducers. NOx is a large emission product of med/heavy duty diesel engines. i believe they are tested for NOx(not as strictly as auto though), HC, and i think CO.

This affected Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, International, Ford, and more. They are beginning to crack down on everything.

Even new motorcycles have to be tested. I believe that kicked in for 07 models as well.

Motorcycles don't have to be tested, they're just way more strict about what smog equipment it has to have on when it leaves the factory. The consumer can take all that crap off the day they roll it off the showroom floor. My 07 had a cat on it! HAD a cat on it lol

    I love SMOG!!

New Diesels will ONLY have to meet the standards, my 1993 Dodge is exempt and always will be,

So next time you go across the Sunrise bridge and you can't see because of the black smoke.........thank me!!

ANY car pre 75' does not need to pass a SMOG test,

Get this, say you call Factory 5 or Superformance and order a Cobra kit car

Totally new car, new engine, new VIN.......still does not have to pass SMOG, WHY!! you ask, its all numbers

There are only a very small number of NEW vin numbers being issued to kit cars so they make them exempt rather that having to deal with trying to figure out how to smog a replica with any different number of engines in it.

At SEMA there were at least 15 companies displaying NEW reproduction car bodies, 1st gen Camaros, 32 Fords, 49 Mercs, Fast back mustangs, Cobras, 57 Chevys, C10 trucks, you name it, by next year you can build your own muscle car from a catalog, and ITS ALL NEW and NO SMOG!!

What is even better is that most of these bodies are being built in......wait.....yea you guessed it.........TAIWAN!!!!

Now would a 69' Camaro built with all over seas parts be an "Import Car"????? HAHAHAHA!!!!

One thing I was suprised not to see alot of at SEMA was high end Japanese motors in American muscle cars,

I guess because for the cost of a 1000hp RB or 2JZ you can build angry V8's

Hey there was TWO EVO's with LS-1/6's in them......hehehe
