Default got my new car. new project car that is...still DSM

    Towed it home last night.

1995 Eclipse GSX, 59k miles on body and engine. Needs serious attention though. currently running, yet not running at the same time

car has been sitting for about a year, and oil is old along with all the fluids pretty much. really bad oil leaks..looks like i'll be replacing the gaskets on it...valve cover, head, and oil pan.when i take the head off i can see if there are any damaged internals, but i've heard it running and everything just fine until the head gasket gave the rest of the way. turbo is in great shape. interior is in good shape. exterior needs paint attention, driver door handle, weather stripping, new tint job (horrible job on it now). at least all the recall and warranty work has been done. clutch is in pretty good shape. and it will need a stock gsx exhaust and bov recirc. kit to pass smog. currently has a 3inch downpipe and back including high flow cat. it needs to go, so if anyone wants it you can take it.

the only mods to it are an apex'i fmic with upper piping, apex'i bov vented to atmosphere currently, h&r lowering springs(changing those out), eroding wheels, eroding paint (bay area car that wasnt protected), and gay blitz body kit. the guy said he never raced it but he must be full of shit, cuz i drove it like 10 miles when the engine overheated and i had to pull over and shut it off. the coolant was smoking bad. so far i've only been able to see under the valve cover, and i dont see any heat damage at all, so looks like im lucky so far. It has no oil at all anymore though, it shot out under the car, and after 30 minutes there was a pool of it under the car.

i'll be taking pics of it as soon as i can get my hands on a camera. so i can show you all the dump im starting this project from. this car currently makes my old RS look stellar, but give me a year or 2 and this gsx will be Nice.

Any help you guys can provide me with would be great. I dont have much experience working on the 4g63 internals, but every engine is basically the same. But I would like any help you can give me. Any general problem areas with the 4g63? Anything that I should replace while im in there besides the gaskets? I cant afford to build up the engine for a while, right now im just looking to rebuild what i need to so i can get this thing running right.

We'll, if you're already gunna be in there when you replace the head gasket, I say that you should replace all the gaskets that you can, like the front case gaskets, BS elimination, etc...

yeah i figured i'd do as many gaskets as possible, or at least that look worn at all.

i've been advised against the balance shaft eliminator, and im going to keep my shaft.

I would go to Roseville PicknPull asap. They have 2 6bolt long blocks that look to be in good condition. Today and yesterday was half off, so picking up a 6bolt long block for 60 bucks is a steel. Then do the usual gasket replaements :)

    I'm wondering why also....

That was the first mod I did on both of my 1gB AWDs.....been running without one since 2002 on my white dsm and since 2005 on my red dsm.

It's one less thing to go wrong and take your timing belt with it.

Well i honestly find Jonathon (Old Dirty No Seven) to be one of the most knowledgable DSM techs around, and I remembered him saying this:

NEVER TAKE THE BALANCE SHAFT BELT OFF, OR DO A BALANCE SHAFT REMOVAL WITHOUT HAVING YOUR ENGINE REBALANCED, i.e. during a rebuild

if you do take the balance shaft belt off, you will still have that other shaft spinning behind the oil pump driven gear causing undue harmonics that WILL KILL YOUR OIL PUMP!!!!!

if you do the hack job removal and take both of them out your lower end is now OUT OF BALANCE and your rod bearings will hate you after a while.

I have seen dyno numbers with the shafts in and out on a bone stock motor, it actually made LESS power with the shafts removed due to the engine almost working against it self.

I actually talked to a couple instructors at UTI and they agreed, the balance shaft is actually in there for a reason, that is helpful in the long run. not to mention for daily driving, there is certainly less vibration.

    Anyways...

aside from replacing the gaskets, would you guys recommend me replacing anything else while its apart?

Not much should be worn out - only about 60k miles....however the car has been sitting for almost a year. so obviously replace all fluids....just wish i could drain that old gasoline out.o well, hopefully its not too bad.
