Actually its a pretty good question,

Say you bolted it up, hooked everything up and the last thing you went to bolt up was your 97' cam sensor only to find that the intake cam on the 95'-96 heads were NOT drilled for the trigger wheel.......oops time to rip all the timing belt stuff off and change the cam and do it all over again,

So to answer your question YES the casting, valves and exhaust cam are the same, you will need to install the 97' intake cam into the 96 head.

I did the same thing on the new motor i got for the 97gst i had,,, i had to pull the damn t belt back off and change the cam... wooo hooo
