    Default 1g trans/2g car? (fwd->awd)

Just wondering if while doing a FWD->AWD conversion, has anybody examined the logistics of putting a 1g engine/trans into a 2g gst and a 2g GSX rear end in with appropriate driveshaft modifications?

Don't know that it's even feasable, and haven't really looked at the differences between 1g and 2g trannies, so I was hoping that someone that sees these parts everyday (Jonathan?) might tell me if/and why it won't fit.

1g engine and trans will go right in, you will not even need to change the drive shaft, 1g t case and 2g case are the same on the outside, some of them had different inner gear ratios all A/T cars are different

    1g in a 2g= :D

One of the old 1G AWD members put a 2G tranny in his car and he had to modify his shifter linkage/cables but thats about it. Not sure if Jonathan can verify this, but you should look into getting at least a 93-94 tranny. 89-90 awd are about as usefull as sh !t. Unless you like replacing 1st & 2nd synchros every 6 months.

Yea you have to change the shifter cable brackets on the top of the trans (the ones that hold the cables)
    thats pretty much it.

yea stay away from any AWD trans other than a 23 spline the 21 and 22's are junk

So, in what year 1g's can I find the 23 spline AWD tranny & T-case?

I know my red 92 AWD has a 23 spline tranny because i took off the transfer case and counted the splines for shyts and giggles one day.

I'm pretty sure my white 92 AWD has a 22 spline tranny. The 23 splines are the ones that have the better 3-4 gearset right?

    Aren't the 23 splines found in the 93-94 AWD's?

23's can be found in 91 and up AWD's but its kind of hit and miss in the 91 cars , some were 23 and some were 22

92 and up were all 23, unless some "EL Cheapo" DSM'er changed it out for a colt vista AWD trans from PnP

so, which are better, the 93-94 AWD 5-speed trannys or the 91-92 AWD 5-speed trannys?

    ...both being 23 spline.

I've read a lot about people saying that the 93-94 23 spline trannys are better then the 91-92....even Jon from TRE made a post about those trannys being better.

So is this true or a myth?

What year/spline AWD tranny is the optimum one to get for a 92 AWD 5-speed?

Well, the tranny I have is a switchable fwd/awd that was in a '90... Its not technically mine, but since the orignial owner never picked it up, I have it... was just wondering a) if it was any good, and b) if it could be used in a spyderAWD conversion... I assume the rear ends were completely different, but the rear end got dumped when I had to move anyway, and it was only a 3 bolt.

    Nice Jon!!!

You have a JDM Galant VR-4 trans!!!!

the only thing bad about those is if the t case goes out you need to change the transmission also , or find another switchable t case

well, that's good to know. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get that spyder (working on it, but being broke all the time makes things difficult) I guess it's not too big of a surprise though, the motor was jdm too. is why I got the car so cheap... sorta wish I held onto the suspension though, could have welded up a nice tube frame and had something scary fast like the ariel atom, just AWD and running a much better motor than the honda motor (though gotta give it to them, that's one fast f'in honda :-p)

On a tangent, I was in roseville last week and saw some fucker driving one of them Ariel Atom's on Douglas... anybody else seen that?
