Default high egt, i'm worried... or stupid

ive been noticing for a while now that my egt varies between 1500F and 1600F degrees when im cruising on the freeway. cruising at 75mph, the egt shows 1500F or just under that. if i accelerate even further, say to 80 or 85mph, the egt hits or comes pretty close to 1600F. if i set the cruise control at 75mph and let it pull a huge hill, my egt will hit or go past 1600F. im wondering if this is normal or not. i have a walbro 255 and no pressure regulator. boost is set to 14psi. the egt probe is on the #1 exhaust runner, around 3 inches away from the exhaust flange. i logged with justin the other day and it showed that the timing was pulled way back. please help! not to sound like a newb but is my engine going to explode soon?, haha.

OH Man, You're F'd in the A! No, just playin.

You're overrunning your fpr by running such a high pressure pump. I saw lean conditions in that scenario as well and even with a maft/safc its super difficult to tune out just a pump with no afpr. I personally think you should take out the pump unitl you get an afpr to turn the pressure back down. 1600? isn't too bad, but anything past that and you better know what you're doing. Logger and fuel control?

High temps like that are normal in stoich conditions such as idle, cruise, and low throttle. I think if the overrun were a big problem, he would see lower EGTs due to the intercooling effect of extra fuel in the combustion chamber. That doesn't mean you don't need an AFPR. I'd start saving for one :)

That's why I couldn't figure it out either when I had just a pump, theoretically more fuel then air = lower egt temps. Then I read about pre-ignition due to running too rich, causing knock, then causing a hotter burn through the exhaust. There were several threads about it in Tuners and Talk. I just assumed that had to been the problem then got an afpr. After that it went away :)

Overly rich mixtures aren't going to pre-ignite at closed loop due to it's timing characteristics. They can pre-ignite during open loop.

You said you saw lean condition during your overrun problem. Abnormally high fuel pressure at the rail is only going to create a rich condition anywhere before fuel pressure is equal to the lowest pressure the spring can maintain.

An overly rich mixture can continue burning through the exhaust manifold during the exhaust stroke and cause the EGT probe to see a high temp.

im still somewhat baffled as to where i go from here. the 255 is going to stay in there since i cant find the original. so would my best bet be an afpr? if so, what brand would you all recommend?

Basically, your 255lph pump is creating weird fuel delivery problems at vaccum and possible low boost situations. Like cruising on the free way, lightly accelerating, and even just at idle. That's because the stock fuel pressure regulator can't handle the pressure your aftermarket pump is putting out. That adjustable fuel pressure regulator will take care of that.

Here's the Aeromotive that most DSMers like. Seems to have a near perfect track record.
